On Tuesday, 10th September 2024, the CWU joins the global effort in recognising World Suicide Prevention Day. This year’s theme, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” encourages everyone to “Start the Conversation.” With over 700,000 lives lost to suicide each year, it remains a significant public health challenge, deeply affecting individuals and communities worldwide.
The CWU remains committed to creating a suicide-safer environment within the workplace. Since 2020, we have trained over 500 members in Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), ensuring that more people are equipped to provide support when it’s needed the most. Newly trained MHFAiders are now also encouraged to join the Association of Mental Health First Aiders to foster collaboration and best practice.
It’s crucial for us, as a union, to be ready to spot signs of mental distress, offer immediate support, and guide individuals to professional help. We encourage all members to talk openly about mental health and remind you that talking about feelings doesn’t have to be scary. For further information and resources, please visit Samaritans.
